Despite 3-2 defeat to the host team Bayelsa Queens FC in a thrilling encounter yesterday evening at the Samson Siasia stadium Yenagoa, the former WAFU- B champions will not be distracted by the defeat. The coach Moses Aduku side have vowed to remain committed as attention have been shifted to the next home game.
The Benin- City ladies actually gave good account of themselves. It was a game of two NWFL heavy weights. Beyond halting Edo Queens good run, the host was actually lucky to have ran away with 3-2 defeat. It was a high profile game that attracted a lot of attention action.
The match represented a competitive encounter between the two age long South-South rivals.
Edo Queens opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, with Adegbemile Rebecca beating Linda jiwuakwu in goal for the Prosperity Girls with a header from a corner kick.
Kindness Chinaza equalized for the Prosperity Girls in 44 minute to end the first half one goal apiece.
At the resumption of the second half, Janet Akekoromowei made it two for the host side with a precise finish bringing the score line to 2-1
Edo Queens came back with a force and mounted a determined response to prove to the defending champions that they equal to the task. The effort yielded results as Nwanchukwu Adanna scored in the 90+1 minute to make it 2-2. It was a strike that silenced the teeming supporters of Bayelsa Queens.
When fans were already leaving the Stadium a penalty was awarded to Bayelsa Queens in 97th minutes, when Edo Queens player was said to have handled the ball and captain, Blessing Ilivieda of Bayelsa Queens wasted no time in putting the ball into the net, giving Bayelsa Queens a slim victory over Edo Queens.
In a post match interview, the assistant coach of Edo Queens Gabriel Benson, expressed dismay over the way the game ended in favour of the host team.
According to him:
“Well in football, is about mistakes. You make mistake you go back home to make corrections. For us we have learnt our lessons. Before we started the game, we were expecting a fair game. We never prepared for something like this.
Everybody was waiting for the league to kickoff, but for this match to end like this, it means the future of the league is in jeopardy. It is one game at a time, we have put this one aside, we are going back home to prepare for our next game. We would continue to be focused.”
For Bayelsa Queens head coach Whyte Ogbonda, he said:
‘It was a tough game as we expected, but I give kudos to my girls for keeping their cool and playing according to plan”.
“We have laudable plans for this season and we will try and execute them as each game comes. For this game against Edo Queens, it was not an easy one but we’re happy we won”.
