Red -hot Edo Queens Football Club of Benin kicked off the NWFL 2023/24, Super six trophy quest on a scintillating note by thrashing Confluence Queens of Lokoja 5-1 in the opening match played today at the Samson Siasia Stadium Yenagua.
Emem Essien, opened scoring for Edo Queens in13th minute of action, while Merit Offor, of Confluence Queens got the equalizer for her side in 22nd minute bringing score line to 1-1 in the early minutes of the game.
Edo Queens goal getter Goodness Osigwe, increased the tally in 24th minute to give Edo Queens full confidence.
Fantastic dangling Emem Essien, netted in the third goal that put the opponent off balance. Edo Queens were just too hot for the girls from Lokoja to handle. They dominated in all departments of the game and were full of accolades from the fans at the following their impressive performance at the game.
Goodness Osigwe, who scored brace in match was described by fans as the best player in that game. Moses Esther who was outstanding netted in the fourth goal for Edo Queens in 35 minute of action. The girls from Ancient City were really on fire throughout the duration of the game. There was actually no dull moment.
Troublesome first half for Confluence Queens ended with Edo Queens smiling into the dressing room with 4-1 lead.
Upon resumption of second half the game became one- sided with Edo having total control mounting pressure on the opponents. Osigwe Goodness’s 62nd minute fifth goal for Edo Queens was devastating for the opponent also confirms Edo Queens supremacy over Confluence Queens.
Edo Queens coach Moses Aduku, made some changes to enable other players on the bench have a feel of the game. This victory has sent a warning signal to other opponents that Edo Queens is a team to watch out for in this competition.
With three points in their pocket, they will be home to Rivers Angels on Monday in the second match of the competition.
Speaking after the game, Coach Moses, described the victory as a sweet revenge, saying that he was humiliated by Confluence Queens last season in Asaba.
“I give thanks to God for the victory, yes my girls worked very hard, we had opportunities we utilized them. Is not that we played badly in the last Super six, just that we didn’t take our chances.”
“Confluence is a good team, they are not a pushover side they got few chances but fail to covert them. It is a pay back time for us. We are here for serious business and is one game at a time. We are done with this, our attention is now on the next game.
We are here to win, Government is waiting for us at home they have done so much for us, it is our turn to reciprocate their good gesture. For us we are in Bayelsa to win.”
